Ed Richards seems like a bit of a twat to me

Some quotes from Media Guardian today:
"Ed Richards, the Ofcom chief executive, has defended the new wide-ranging restrictions on junk food advertising to children…"

"Five chief executive Jane Lighting: 'The long-term future of UK-produced children's programming outside the BBC is bleak.'"

"Mr Richards, of course, is the architect of a potentially big intervention into the media market - the public service provider."
More tax-funded media, more restrictions on the free market. Who is Ed Richards? Here's his CV:
Prior to Ofcom Ed was Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister for Media, telecoms, internet and e-govt. Before that he was Controller of Corporate Strategy at the BBC. He also worked in consulting at London Economics Ltd, as an advisor to Gordon Brown MP and began his career as a researcher with Diverse Production Ltd, where he worked on programmes for Channel 4.
Ah, that explains it.

Milton Friedman RIP.

I am missing a trick. I really should become a self-styled consultant in something.

Yes, I shall call myself a Consultant (in capitals, natch) and claim to be the World's Foremost Expert on Media, Broadcasting and Cheesecake issues.

I shall award myself a doctorate.

I shall then set up a 'think-tank' and wangle my way into as many radio and TV studios as I can.

I shall call my think-tank something appropriately pompous like The International Cheesecake Policy, Strategy and Research Unit'.

I shall then pen pseudo-academic policy papers with suitably grandiose titles: something like 'Social Inclusion and Cheesecake Deprivation: A Strategy for Change, Going Forward' will do.

And lo...Bob's your father's illegitimate brother: before I know it, I shall be a Special Advisor (in capitals, natch) to a real heavyweight like David Miliband or Margaret Hodge.

What's that expression again? Ah, yes:

'People who can, do; people who can't become policy advisors.'

in other words, he's a tosser of the highest order who has zero clue as to how a free market operates.

this new announcement sounds very stalinist to me.

as a parent i have simple solution to junk food adverts- its called the "off switch".

and as for "happy meals" , when i am in town, and my youngster is pleading with me to go into the MacDonalds - i also have a simple answer.

its a short word. only two letters - its the word "no".

( my youngster has never been inside a macdonalds btw as a result)

clematus -> sounds like a plan. i'll be the "Strategic Synergy Director". lets bill them at , say, a thousand pounds a hour.
we'll advise them on the health and safety issues of cheesecakes.

But Cheesecake is a junk food. People only eat it becuase they enjoy the flavour and texture! Are they thinking of others when they eat this?

We can only hope that a National Food Service is setup that runs as succesfully as the NHS Keeps the UK in health. This can remove any of that vile choice over what to eat (except for the non-proles).
